Pandemic leads to increase smoking rates

The uncertainty and stress of living through a pandemic are pushing current smokers to increase their intake and many ex-smokers to relapse back to old smoking habits. It’s the perfect bad storm for those who are trying to make life changes, and with ongoing revisions to the rules and regulations on the sale and distribution of e-cigs, we are living in a world where it has become hard to remain smoke-free. In fact, studies and surveys are showing that the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the reasons that 2020 has seen so much increase in global smoking rates.

The study

The Guardian, a popular British daily newspaper, conducted a study based on a survey that was completed between April 30 and May 13, 2020, using YouGov’s COVID-19 tracker — with data that showed a representation of 2.2 million people that had increased their smoking habits during the beginning of this year’s global health crisis. The Guardians appealed for the public to speak up in regards to the above findings and responses included that smoking behaviors during the pandemic were heightened because of factors such as anxiety, stress, and even the need to take a break and step outside for those who were working from home, self-isolating, or remaining in their residences to slow the spread of the virus.

What was the result?

In combination with other studies conducted during pandemic months, another UK analysis entitled, “COVID-19: Risk of increase in smoking rates among England’s 6 million smokers and relapse among England’s 11 million ex-smokers” there are concerns of how lockdowns, social distancing, and self-isolation are factors that are leading to increased loneliness and stress and a heightened potential for former smokers to relapse on their progress. Hence, public health experts are continuing to urge policymakers to refrain from banning safer nicotine alternatives such as vaping, which is geared towards helping former smokers’ transition away from the harmful effects of tobacco use.

Thus, if former smokers haven’t already turned back to their old habits, they’re likely purchasing their vape products from the black market due to ongoing vaping restrictions, flavors ban, and the delay in production and shipping of their products.
