Although the number of people who smoke in the UK has steadily fallen in recent years due to the large amounts of research affirming that tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable or premature death and disease, there’s still lots of government pushback on the regulation of quit smoking aids like the e-cig. While e-cigs have been in the spotlight for more than a decade now, they are still a fairly new technology with lots to learn about how these brilliant devices are helping those who struggle with tobacco and nicotine addiction. Needless to say, researchers are in awe of their abilities to change lives and the following study concluded that e-cigs are successful in helping long-term smokers achieve abstinence from combustible cigarettes.
The study
A new study out of King’s College London is highlighting daily e-cigarette use as a “clear benefit” to quit smoking, supporting the effectiveness of these innovative devices when compared to other nicotine replacement products, including nicotine gum, the patch, and lozenges. The study was published on March 10, just in time for the health awareness event, No Smoking Day, which is celebrated in the United Kingdom annually and is intended to help those who are trying to quit smoking.
What was the result?
Researchers at the college received funding to conduct an analysis that would delve deep into data that was collected through an online survey between 2012 and 2017. Published in the journal, Addiction, the effectiveness of e-cigs in aiding abstinence from smoking for at least one month was logged, with more than 1,155 people participating—including a mixture of smokers, ex-smokers who had quit within one year of completing the survey, and e-cigarette users. There were subsequent follow-ups with each participant.
The study found that people who used a refillable e-cigarette to quit smoking, such as JUUL, Logic, or Vuse Vapor, were over five times more likely to achieve abstinence from smoking tobacco cigarettes, compared to those that were not using an e-cig to help.
“These findings are in line with previous research, showing that e-cigarettes are a more effective aid for quitting than nicotine replacement therapy and prescribed medication,” said Dr. Máirtín McDermott, Research Fellow at King’s College London’s National Addiction Centre.
Dr. Leonie Brose, Reader at King’s College London’s national Addiction Centre added: “Despite the World Health Organization’s (WHO) cautious stance on e-cigarettes, studies like ours show they are still one of the most effective quitting aids available.”
