While some people might argue that flavored e-cigarettes lure youth to tobacco products, others contend that the array of flavors keep their combustible cigarette addiction astray. The battle between scientific studies is endless. However, e-cigarette use in the United States has skyrocketed over the past decade and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have decided to crack down on the debate in hopes of keeping e-cigarettes out of the hands of children. On the other hand, it’s important to take a look at how the potential ban of flavors will impact the population that are combating their use of combustible cigarettes through the use of e-cigs.
What is the FDA proposing?
The FDA is concerned with the underage use of e-cigarettes. They have asked top-selling e-cigarette brands to change their marketing tactics and make e-cigarette flavors less appealing to minors.
How does this affect vapers?
What many people don’t realize is that flavors play a huge role in helping adult combustible cigarette smokers make the switch to vaping. For many, vaping a sweet dessert flavored e-juice gives them the ability to psychologically separate the act of smoking and vaping. Since combustible cigarettes are only offered in tobacco and menthol flavors, first-time vapers have an opportunity to start fresh with a product that gives them the nicotine that their body craves, while also offering them a similar sensation.
Moreover, the vast majority of e-juice sold is flavored, which could mean that many vapers will likely turn back to their prior smoking habits without it. Evidence also suggests that vaping is not a gateway to smoking, so it really doesn’t make sense to place the same blame on e-cigarettes when a teenager makes the choice to try smoking.
While traditional cigarettes contain tobacco and nicotine, e-cigarettes only contain the nicotine concentration that is chosen by the user. There is no combustion, smoke or lingering smell, a helpful aid for people who are quitting smoking. Needless to say, the levels of toxicants found in combustible cigarettes alone should be enough to reconsider banning something that is clearly working.
This is why it’s so important for people who are quitting smoking to have access to a lower-risk product like an e-cigarette. Whether flavored e-juice is the reason that people are able to toss out traditional cigarettes or the reason that they never try them in the first place, it may be dependent on their availability.
What are your thoughts? Do you think flavor regulations are beneficial for both parties involved?
