As vaping technology continues to evolve over time, so have myths and misconceptions surrounding the smoking cessation product. It’s time to tackle some unanswered questions that you may have about e-cigarettes and how they are used.
MYTH: Vaping products are tobacco products
Many people believe that vaping products contain tobacco because they possess varying levels of nicotine, but that simply isn’t the case.
Although it is one of the most common misconceptions surrounding vaping, it is important to know that e-cigarettes do not burn any tobacco or produce any smoke. In fact, that’s why so many people turn to e-cigs as an alternative to smoking. Unlike smoking a combustible cigarette, vaping allows its user to be in complete control and choose the level of nicotine in their products.
If you disassemble any vaping product, such as the Logic vape pen, you will not be able to find any tobacco in the tank or the cartomizers. Instead, you will find that there are a variety of strengths available, with an assortment of nicotine levels to choose from — even e-cigs that are completely nicotine free.
MYTH: Vaping is a gateway to smoking combustible cigarettes
Many people attempt to link the use of an e-cigarette product to the start of a combustible cigarette habit. However, vaping was created as an anti-smoking aid with the goal of giving its user control over their nicotine intake.
It’s no secret that smoking is hard for people to quit. Even with the knowledge of all its harmful side effects. Yet, e-cigs offer people a nicotine replacement which allows them to gradually decrease the amount of nicotine their body needs, without exposing themselves to the harmful chemicals that reside inside combustible cigarettes.
In actuality, smoking use has “decreased by 27% between 2013 and 2015 [and] cigarette smoking among high school adolescents is at an all time low of 13%, down from 17% in previous years…youth tobacco use has never been this low.”
Needless to say, vaping cannot be defined as a gateway to smoking combustible cigarettes because studies have not been able to capture this correlation. A “significant linkage between e-cigarettes and long-term smoking has not been established.”
MYTH: E-liquid contains lethal amounts of nicotine
How many times have you heard someone say that, “nicotine is more poisonous than cyanide?”
Rumors have made their way around falsely stating that e-juice contains lethal amounts of nicotine. While the juice does contain a percentage of nicotine — the levels are chosen by the consumer based on their nicotine needs — it is not sold in levels that are dangerous for the users. A toxic dose of nicotine is between 30 to 60 mg, while the average vaping liquid only contains about 4 ml of 12 mg/ml e-liquid.
Do the math. It is highly unlikely that vapers will ingest dangerous amounts of nicotine if they are using their e-cig as intended.
